Galactic of the day

Galactic - "Hustle Up" from Adam Johnson on Vimeo.

Billy stands alone.

I think it's been about twenty years since Billy Corgan has had hair. Actually, it's really hard to picture him with hair. Even in the picture here, I can't see the hair. It just doesn't belong and it's confusing.

This video illustrates it best. It's like a halo, hazing about his person. Making you distrust it's very existence.

Following the Smashing Pumkins demise in 2000, Billy formed the short lived Zwan with original Pumkin's drummer Jimmy Chamberlin. The duo reformed the Pumkins in 2006. However, Chamberlin left the band in March 2009, leaving Corgan the only original member. But I bet the hair has got an eye on him from above.

Iggy Fucking Pop

Iggy just put out a new to you, new to him, new to everyone album. I'm not sure if all that's true, so you take a listen and report back. Hell, he could have been gearing up his whole career to this. Or he's just been hanging out with Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen and Serge Gainsbourg a whole hell of a lot.

Iggy Pop - les feuilles mortes
Uploaded by ceciloo. - See the latest featured music videos.

And yes, I know Serge's been dead for nearly twenty years. But Iggy's pulling from beyond. This song may not best exemplify the Serge, and his solo prowessness, but it's one of my favorites.

Chameleon of the day

Okaaaay. I just posted a sounds-like on these guys ~ Fanfarlo. If you roll back to the May 15th post they did their darndest Beirut impression. With I'm A Pilot, they pull an O'Canada ~ drawing out the strings and frontman Simon Balthazar's vocals in Arcade Fire flair. Uhm, well done?

I go by Murphy

See Me River ~ ED JACKSON ~ 2009 EP The Great Unwashed on Aviation Records.

Midlake ~ ROSCOE ~ 2006 The Trials of Van Occupanther on Bella Union.

Spinto Band ~ ... MANDY ~ 2005 Nice and Nicely Done on BarNone Records.

CAKE ~ JOLENE ~ 1994 Motorcade of Generocity (Re-issued March, 2009)

XTC ~ ... NIGEL ~ 1979 Drums and Wires on Atlantic Records.

Bill Callahan out from the Smog

Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle is the second solo album by Bill Callahan under his own name, released on April 14, 2009 on Drag City Records. Here's a song from that album performed last month in Columbus, Ohio. What a treat.

Bill Callahan: Rococo Zephyr from Scott Johnson on Vimeo.

Cat Power covered Bathysphere on her 1996 album What Would the Community Think. She would go on to cover another Smog song; Red Apples, on her Covers Record, released in 2000.

Watch this Bill Callahan video from 2007 via Black Cab Sessions driving through the streets of LondonTown. Under the moniker, Smog, that song ~ Rivergaurd ~ was released on Callahan's seventh album Knock Knock in 1999. It's a beaut ~ and was his fourth and final collaboration with Jim O'rouke as producer.

Kuala Lumpur of the day

This is Starry Eyes from the B-Side of All My Friends, released in 2007. It was part of a medley-mash with Freak Out, running something over 12 minutes.

It's not very fair to compare James Murphy to this.

Wussy.

This is Wussy. They're from the 'Nasty... and have their roots firmly planted in some mid-west indie rock. This video isn't the best, but dig around and listen for Muscle Cars...

I'm hearing a Karen-Oesqueness that needs a lozenge with underlying Built to Spill. Fronted by Doug Martsch, original member of Treepeople, from Idaho, 1988:

Again, not the best video out there, what's up with that side angle, dude? ~ maybe just watch the first minute or so to get the connection... And here we have perhaps the foundation for both of the aforementioned: The Flaming Lips, formed in Norman, Oklahoma 1983.

My Shit is Perfect! of the day

Mother-Fucking BobLog III. His shit is perfect. Last night at Union Hall in BK, NY he did this with his guitar ~

And it was fantastic. It may have been one long song broken up over the 75 minute set, but it was one hell of a song. It was a wee difficult to desipher the lyrics through the fighter-pilot-helmet and the telephone-receiver-microphone. I made a few up along the way. And I think he would appreciate that. One song was titled Bah DaDa Da Bah NaDa Nah DaDa BahBah BahDaDaDa DaDa DA BahBah NaDaDaa Da ~ a title he repeated twice, for accuracy points. And he wasn't kidding. The song was about nothing at all ~ which he was very proud of.

Bob Log III also likes to share his knees with the ladies; preferably after dipping some of their tit into some scotch. [see the video section of his website: provided above] But alas, there was no tit-dipping last night. Sorry Bob Log III.

Sounds like of the day

Fronted by Swedish musician Simon Balthazar, the UK band Fanfarlo sounds like...

Too Cool for School of the Day

morning dose of Passion Pit

  • Passion Pit's new album MANNERS comes out May 19th.
  • Live in NYC: June 19th and 20th.

12 May 2009

Video of the Day

School of Seven Bells

Burt, you sonnofahbitch.

Burt Bacharach has written a total of 70 Top 40 hits in the US, won three Academy Awards, six Grammy Awards (including the prestigious Trustees Award with collaborator and lyricist Hal David), is now into his sixth decade of composing and recording, nine #1 hits, 48 top ten hits, and more than 500 songs composed.

Burt's cool. He's allegedly involved in Dr. Dre's 2009 yet-to-be-released album Detox. And he used beats mixed by Dr. Dre in his 2005 solo album, At This Time; penning his own lyrics on an entire album for the first time since the late 70's. Guest stars included Elvis Costello and Rufus Wainwright. Yeah, bitches.

Burt. Happy Birthday you s.o.b.

More of same that hasn't happened yet.

p>

Yes, this is a repeat post. And I'll probably post it once more... Passion Pit's new album MANNERS comes out May 19th.

Live in NYC: June 19th and 20th, both already sold out. But come on, you know you can get tickets if you really want them. And you do.

Tonight! In a Brooklyn near you.

An event formally held at Union Hall: The Union Hall Secret Science Club.

Outgrowning the people under the stairs vibe at Union Hall, the SSC is now held near the river Gowanus at The Bell House. Tonight's topic : your brain! Let's find out how it remembers stuff, what drugs to take to remember stuff better and what's up with those lab mice? Starts at 7.30pm and costs zero dollars.

Here is a topical episode from my favorite radio program ever. It's called Radio Lab ~ So listen to it and come feeling all smarter than everyone else and shit. Don't forget.

*Radio Lab episodes from all 5 seasons ~ plus extra podcast features ~ are here.

Artist of the Day

Stephin Fucking Merritt. I'm pretty sure that's actually his middle name. Or at least how I envision how he introduces himself to people.

With not only the most distinctive voice, but one of my truly favorites, Stephin Fucking Merritt holds a big middle finger to leisure time. He's created and played significant roles in these bands:

  • The Magnetic Fields
  • The 6ths
  • The Gothic Archies
  • Future Bible Heroes

They can all be found under Stephin's House of Tomorrow umbrella.

* Not an official MF video, but I think it was put together well and I like that song*

He has also collaborated with children's book writer Daniel Handler, more familiarly known as Lemony Snicket and his series of unfortunate events. Under the name The Baudelaire Memorial Orchestre, Merritt wrote the soundtrack for the Tragic Treasury audio book.

Merritt recently scored the music and wrote the lyrics to Coraline the musical which opened May 7th at the MCC Theatre in NYC. And, yes, that Coraline with the rad 3-D that's probably still in a theatre near you. This stage adaptation has been in the works for over five years but has been all caught up in movie legal strife. Well, now it's playing, but only til June 20th. Here, the talents behind the curtain talk:

Animal Collective; live and in your livingroom. Tonite!

They will be playing music at the 930 Club in Washington DC tonight and NPR is there to webcast the performance in its entirety.
It starts at 10pm EST. Learn more.

Come on in. The water's fine.

And in case you're home on Friday night, click on over to Last Call. The Friendly Fires will be there for you.

08 May 2009

Found of the day

This found is fantastic. They share what others have not meant for you, or them.

Check out the tour page for an event near you. There were two in NY this week but I didn't find out until today. Don't let it happen to you.

And, yes. There is a dirty version.

Olof of the day

Another Icelandic gem, Olof Arnalds played last night at Sycamore. This is a great spot of a venue. It's like a wooden ye olden times candle-lit thing. It's great. Seats about 35. You should go to that.

Olof sings Icelandic folk. She has a wonderful voice and also performs in the crazy good Icelandic troupe Mum. It seems that everything is good that comes out of Iceland. If only they could export their economy.

the artist as critic

The Hour of Bewilderbeast will be celebrating it's ninth anniversary this June. It's a just-push-play album, and those are my favorites.

The guy is British singer/songwriter Damon Gough. He goes by the stagename Badly Drawn Boy and the namesake is illustrated at right. That is Sam, and he's the main character from a British cartoon from the 1970's. But if you follow that link and scroll to the bottom, you will see that Gough could have really been a number of badly drawn peoples (Arkwright the Horse, particularly). But the boy will do just fine.

The Pains.

You should know and go see this band. I'm not the only one who thinks so.

Start with Stay Alive... and then go see them at Bowery Ballroom on May 12th. And I know it's alrready sold out.

06 May 2009

new to you of the day

pow wow!
Well, these guys are pretty stripped down and dirty. And I like it. I have read references to Velvet Underground, but it seems like every band the light touches these days gets that nod. So i won't. Go for the Indian headresses and band name. Let's keep it superficial here.

This four-piece is going to fit right in with the aforementioned on Thursday night at Glasslands ~ quite unpolished and loud. Like a rock hitting the bottom of a canyon. But with vocals and guitars and such.

I think they recorded this in my bathroom. From my living room. Having a record release party at Bruar Falls on Saturday, May 9th.
More information on these new and other new bands in NYC ~ although they might as well just say NEW BROOKLYN bands, who lives in Manhattan? or Queens? ~ can be found in the latest L Mag. Pick one up on the corner on your way back to Brooklyn. Aw, crap. The Beets live in Queens. Whatever. All their shows are in BK.

Fever Ray

Fever Ray is Karin DreijerAndersson of The Knife.

The Knife is the aforementioned Karin and her brother and/or husband Olof Dreijer. There is an air of confusion, due mainly to lack of interviews granted by the Swedish duo, of their true relationship ~ I think it's now confirmed they're siblings ~ These are a bit dated Knife tracks, but the Fever Ray album was just released in March and if you have the chance to see them perform, do eet. They have a knack for the smoke and mirrors. And rad neon glow.

A Secret?

If you've never, you really should...

really check out the origins of this and many a more video from LA BLOGO. I may loose your frequency but Vincent Moon shoots the best bands in the best places ~ live and with the people. I picked Menomena on a whim, but be prepared to spend many many many an unadulterated and blissful hour here. See you laters.

Cinco de of the Day

Don't get me wrong, Hanna Barbara is okay and everything, but Warner Bros. did it the bestesterest. Mel Blanc and Friz Freleng are the kings of cartoons. The End.

Err, let me go on to say that Slo Poke Rodriguez is my favoritest character. He's lethargic as shit but when it's time to fuck with the gato, bingo.

Brooklyn Film Scene. So be seeing it.

Presented by Brooklyn Arts Council and curated by the Deirdre Corley.

Tonight May 5th @ Galapagos Art Space in DUMBO...

7pm: Brooklyn, and the issues you need to be should knowing.

"... a trio of short docs about issues facing Brooklynites. They touch on the subprime mortgage crisis in East New York, the displacement of residents due to the still unbuilt Brooklyn Yards project, and the firing of the principal of the Kahlil Gibran Arabic School. You know, things you should probably maybe care about but don't. Yet."

9pm: Crossing Borders: Flying on One Engine

"... about the fastest surgeon in the world. Each year he performs hundreds of surgeries on deformed children in India. He happens to live in Brooklyn, and hes also a really crazy interesting character. Seriously, its much funnier movie than it sounds. The film went to SXSW and a couple of other big festivals to good reviews, check it out on the big screen while you can. Its preceeded by a film called Sanza Hanza which is about insane train surfing kids in South Africa. Its beautiful and terrifying and you should come see it."

Wednesday May 6th @ Galapagos Art Space in DUMBO...

7pm: Living the Independent Dream: Brooklyn Filmmakers Panel

"... filmmaker panel featuring Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden (Sugar, Half Nelson), Tia Lessin who was nominated for an Oscar for Trouble the Water, Ramin Bahrani (Chop Shop, Goodbye Solo) and Sundance sensation Cruz Angeles. If you have any interest in filmmaking, this is a ridiculous all star line up, and you could learn a lot. Also, there will be free food."

Yanni of the Day

I Yanni'd! And it was fucking beautiful.
Last Friday night I saw Yanni live at the Radio CIty Music Hall.

Here he is now ~ sans signature moustache. Which is a pretty big deal as Yanni has no upper lip. He's got a funky muzzle.

A muzzle that I believe he shares with Lion-O. As you can clearly see.

Are you in London?

The Doves need extras. Kinda damn short notice if you ask me, Doves. They just released an album last month and start US/Canadian tour on May 14th. City near you?

And because it's so damn entertaining to listen to artists known as Prince complain about the record companies for stealing his dollars... he's smooth:

Nick Cave of the Day

Nick Cave belongs to a secret society that goes by the not-so-secret name The Sons of Lee Marvin. Naturally, to gain entry you must possess a similar cut of jib to the late, great Mr. Marvin. Members include:

Jim Jarmusch: Founding Member ~ The Limits of Control ~ released today, May 1st, in selected theatres

John Lurie
Tom Waits
Iggy Pop
Richard Boes

They reportedly get together to watch Lee Marvin flicks. And I would like to believe that Lee Marvin would have totally been in a movie by the name of this Nick Cave song. If only it were made by someone. Which it should be. Someday.

Happy May Day.

In the Heart of the Beast: a puppet and mask theatre group.

These Minneapolians parade, ceremony and festivalize the unity of pagan and labor traditions. Perhaps you just have to be there... 35,000 people can't be wrong. Well, they probably could be but I love me a puppet show.

Prince Rogers Nelson
is from Minneapolis. I bet he goes to the festival. He seems like a puppet kind of guy. Although he is a Jehovah's Witness. Not sure how that plays out.
